Paint Jar

I have had this same paint jar since 1997 and I love all the layers of paint on it.  This jar has seen my darkest paintings and my most upbeat ones.  I think it might be one of my favorite things in my studio (it also photographs rather well).

Snow White Backdrop

Well, here is the picture of the finished backdrop for the play.  I am not totally satisfied with it but I figured I would post it anyway because I put a LOT of work into it.

Flowers

I’ve been collecting and pressing flower petals for my next project – they are finally ready!  Now, it is time to play.  🙂

Backdrop for Play

Currently working on a backdrop for a school play.  I did this last year and loved it, I was so happy they asked me again.  I have less than a month to get it painted.  I will post the progress as I go along.

Here is one of the sample designs that I sent (my favorite).  Needs some cleaning up once I get going, but I think it would turn out nice.

The Eye

I went shooting with my dad last week (something we do every year on my birthday) and we went to Laumeier Sculpture Park, a wonderful place.   My dad had never been and I had not been in a couple of years.  Now I will say that the big 3D art is not really my thing, I do still love this park but give me a good oil painting any day over the modern beams and chunks of metal configurations.  They did however have this giant eye by Tony Tasset that I totally fell in love with.  The picture below is my dad with the eye so you have perspective of how big it is.  There is just something about the colors and how smooth it is … I love it.  And now, I want one in my back yard.  I could never see myself doing something like this but I can certainly appreciate it.

Drawing of Sarah

I love my friends and look to them for inspiration.  Just did this drawing of my friend Sarah.  Used one of the pictures I took of her at the Female Photo Shoot.  I might be doing more drawing of my friends.  This was SUPER fun!

When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it’s your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else. Most people in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower. I want them to see it whether they want to or not.
~Georgia O’Keeffe

O’Keeffe is one of my all time favorites.  You can say what you want to about her flower paintings but I think they are beautiful (and I don’t see anything dirty in them).  This quote from her always hits home for me because that is really what I try to do with a lot of my art.  There are so many awesome things on this planet that people miss and that is sad to me.  So I want to highlight them and try to get people to take time to notice the little things.

EXAMPLE: On my way home from work today I saw the wind blowing this evergreen tree and the way branches moved, the dark green color of them against the gray sky was so pretty in its simplicity.
I hope I never lose my child like sense of wonder.

Decoupage

I have not done decoupage in years.  I picked it back up a couple days ago and I’m back in love with it.  This is a mini 4×4 panel that I stuck pages from an Asian book on (used book stores are so wonderful).  I think I’m going to do an image transfer of my crow drawing on it.   Will be playing more with it today.

Naughti Gras

St. Louis has an art event each year called Naughti Gras.  The theme of the pieces in the show is erotic art.   This was the 4th year of the show but my first time going.  There was a lot of variety in the pieces – some were tasteful, some were right in your face, and some were just odd.  Some of my favorites were the dark, high contract nudes where the human figure is almost an abstract.  My least favorite was a photo of a womans  bits with a gun pointed at it – was not a fan.

This show did teach me something about myself – I don’t think I will ever really get into erotic art.  Nature and the outdoors is my muse.  The most interesting part of the show for me was a beautiful stairway in the building which I snapped a couple pictures of…

I have a feeling we will attend the show next year and I will take my good camera and we will dress up and make more of an event out of it because there were some interesting people there (great place for people watching).

Oh, and my site is still a little messed up, sorry.  Still working on getting things back in order.
